Three products: open-ticket cruise, dinner cruise, private charter
An open-ticket party cruise sells you a seat, not a boat. You share the deck with strangers, the music is fixed, and the departure time is set for you. A dinner cruise adds a served meal and a seating plan; it suits a birthday table or a company group that wants to talk. A private charter is the only one where you set the route, the playlist and the boarding window. If your group is 50, say 50 guests as an example, a private boat is often the only format that keeps you together. For a stag or hen group, compare our stag do venues in Budapest and hen do venues in Budapest before you commit to a boat; some groups want a fixed base and a boat as one evening.
How many people fit, and how the boat sets the format
The boat rarely decides your guest list; your guest list decides the boat. Event boats in the directory are spread across districts: 6 in District V, 3 in District XIII, 2 in District III, and one each in Districts XX, IV and I. That spread tells you something practical: a boat moored in District V is close to Pest's hotel belt, while a District III mooring sits further north. Small groups are usually pushed toward a shared cruise or a smaller charter. Large groups need a private boat with a clear deck plan. Ask for the maximum seated and maximum standing figures separately, because a boat that holds a full standing crowd may seat far fewer at tables. Public Google ratings for the 40 event and party boats show a median of 4.6, with 75% at 4.5 or above and a median of 172 reviews per listing. Those ratings come from Google Maps data captured at ingestion, not from us. A high review count on a boat tells you it runs often; it does not tell you the deck suits a seated dinner.
Where the boats board: Pest bank, Buda bank, Margaret Island
Most Danube cruise boats in our listings moor on the Pest side. District V has 7 of the 23 Danube cruise boats, District XIII has 3, District III has 2, and Districts II, XXIII and IV carry one each. District V means the embankment near the city centre; District XIII is further north along the Pest bank. Buda-side moorings are thinner in our count, so if your hotel is in Buda, check the walk to the boat before you book. Margaret Island is a third boarding point: some boats use the island's landing stages, which splits the difference between the two banks. Ask the operator for the exact pier name, not just the district. Piers change with water levels, and a short walk can become a tram ride.
Drinks packages, DJs and what is usually extra
The base price on a private charter often covers the hull, the crew and the fuel. Drinks, food, a DJ and decoration usually sit outside it. Ask for a written inclusion list and match it to your group. A welcome drink per person is not the same as an open bar for three hours. A DJ may bring their own kit or use the boat's sound system; the second option can carry a surcharge if the system needs an engineer. For seated dinners, ask whether the menu is fixed or chosen in advance, and whether children's portions exist. If you want a themed night, ask what the boat allows for decoration and whether fixing points exist on deck. Our Danube cruises in Budapest pages list cruise formats, and the Budapest dinner cruise planning guide for groups explains how seated formats differ from standing parties.

Questions to ask before you pay a deposit
Use this checklist in writing, ideally by email, so the answers are on record.
- What is the exact boarding pier, and what is the fallback pier if water levels change?
- How many guests are included in the base price, and what does each extra guest cost?
- Which drinks and food are included, and what is charged on consumption?
- Is the DJ included, or is there a surcharge for using the boat's sound system?
- What is the cancellation policy for weather, high water and low bookings?
- What time does the boat return, and is the mooring the same as the boarding point?
- Are there stairs, and is the deck accessible for guests with limited mobility?
- Is there a cloakroom, and is it staffed?
If the answers come back vague, ask again. A charter that cannot name its pier or its cancellation terms is a charter to skip. For a wider view of what else a group can book, see our party boats in Hungary listings.
Rain, wind and high water: the backup plan
Danube boats run in rain; they stop or reroute when the river is high or the wind is up. Ask the operator what their threshold is and what they offer instead: a later date, a covered boat, or a refund. Get the answer before you pay, because a group of 50 guests, as an example, cannot rearrange a Saturday night quickly. Have a land-based backup in mind for the same evening. A District V restaurant or a ruin bar near the embankment keeps the group together if the boat is cancelled. Confirm current river and weather requirements with the operator and, where relevant, the competent authority; rules on navigation and moorings are theirs to state, not ours.
What we count, and what we cannot tell you
We counted published listings in our directory. A venue can carry more than one type, so a boat may appear as both an event boat and a Danube cruise boat. Coverage is not a census of every boat on the Danube. We have not visited these boats, eaten on them or booked them, so we cannot tell you which crew is warmest or which deck has the better view. We can tell you the numbers: 19,427 published venues in Hungary, 40 event and party boats, 23 Danube cruise boats, a median Google rating of 4.6 across the 40 event boats. That is a starting map, not a recommendation.
Tell us your date, headcount and the kind of night you want. We will point you to the boats that fit, and you can put the checklist to them directly.
Planning questions
Do we have to book the whole boat for a Budapest boat party?
No. You can buy seats on an open-ticket party cruise, book a table on a dinner cruise or charter a private boat. The right choice depends on group size and whether you want to set the music and route yourselves.
Which bank do most Danube cruise boats leave from?
Our listings put most cruise boats on the Pest side, with the largest cluster in District V and more in District XIII. Buda-side moorings are fewer, so confirm the exact pier name before booking, as piers can change with water levels.
Are drinks and a DJ included in a private boat charter?
Often not. The base charter usually covers the boat, crew and fuel, while drinks, food and entertainment are priced separately. Ask for a written inclusion list and check whether using the boat's sound system carries a surcharge.
